Summer Reading

Posted by katyelemlibrary | Posted in Book Talks, Digital, General | Posted on May 31, 2016

Each summer many students experience the “summer slide”.  This happens when students do not read for three months.  Scholastic has an excellent article about this topic with suggestions of getting in some reading over the summer and can be found here.  You can help avoid the summer slide by visiting the public library and checking out books.  If you need suggestions of books to read, the Katy ISD Librarians have compiled a Suggested Summer Reading List for each grade level.  You may find the lists by clicking here or on the link to the right.

You may also access the KE Library ebooks on an iOS or Android device by following these steps:

  • Download these free apps:  Follett Brytewave K-12 Edition and MackinVIA
  • Open the Follett Brytewave app.  Type in your school name and your KISD username and password.
  • Find an ebook or interactive book you would like to read, tap the open button and check it out.

In the MackinVIA app, enter your school name,  then enter your KISD username and password.

The Katy branch of the Harris County Library is hosting its annual Summer Reading Program.  You may register to participate and log the books you have read.  There is also a schedule of events with programs geared toward elementary aged children.   Katy Branch Schedule of Events

Read the Book Before You See the Movie

The Great Gilly Hopkins  by Katherine Paterson — Gilly Hopkins hopes to be shuffled from foster home to foster home until there’s no choice but reunite her with her mother.  When Gilly is placed in Maime Trotter’s home, Gilly is surprised when she starts to love her and doesn’t know what to do when her biological grandmother arrives in her new home.  Read this book soon as the movie is set to release on February 19.

Through the Look Glass and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll is a sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland where Alice finds herself in a reversed world in her mirror.  Johnny Depp is back in character as the Mad Hatter.  I’m looking forward to seeing this movie with a release date of May 27.

The BFG by Roald Dahl — One night the orphaned Sophie looks out her window and sees a BFG walking down the street looking right at her.  The BFG grabs her and takes her to his home.  Sophie soon learns he is a Big Friendly Giant and not a mean giant who eats children.  When the BFG learns Sophie is an orphan, he is very sad and decides to protect her from all of the other giants they meet.  Read the book by Roald Dahl before you see this movie set to release on July 1.

Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by JK Rowling based on one of Harry’s textbooks from Hogwarts.  The movie is about the adventures of the textbook required for first-year Hogwarts students.  Textbook author Newt Scamander writes of his adventures in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards 70 years before Harry reads his book in school.  Look for this movie in theaters November 18.

Which books would you like to see become a movie?  Post a comment and let us know.

Children’s author and illustrator Steve Harpster visited Katy Elementary and practiced drawing fun creatures with all of our students.  The students had a great time learning to look for numbers and letters and patterns in animals in order to draw them.  The library will continue to sell autographed books by Mr. Harpster until Friday, November 20.  He also shared his website,, if you want to check out some of his videos and practice drawing even more animals and monsters.

Preparing for the new school year

Posted by katyelemlibrary | Posted in General | Posted on August 11, 2015

The beginning to mid August is a time filled with sadness and joy.  The sadness comes when summer is coming to an end, but the joy is from the excitement of a new school year.  The KE Library staff is already busy preparing for the staff and students’ return.  This summer the school had new carpet installed, as well as wiring to improve our wireless access.  With all of the new mobile devices on campus, the wifi will be greatly improved!

I am looking forward to seeing all of the students again and hearing about your summer.  I also can’t wait to share some new books with you!

Be sure to stop by the library and say hi on Meet the Teacher Night, Thursday, August 20 from 5:15 – 6:30 pm.

Andy Griffiths, author of the 13-Story Treehouse and other books in the series, visited Katy Elementary to share his newest book, The 39-Story Treehouse with our students.  Mr. Griffiths was hilarious as he told us about the new book, situations and characters.  As the students were leaving the library, there was much excitement about reading.  We can’t wait to read the new book!

Thanks to Books-a-Million at Katy Mills Mall for sponsoring the visit!

Rodeo Time

Posted by katyelemlibrary | Posted in General | Posted on February 20, 2015

This week Katy ISD is holding the annual FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo.  It’s one of my favorite times of the year, so I was so excited to see every student who came in the library this morning wearing boots that I had to take a picture.  That’s what I love about Texas!
